The US Department of Justice NSOPW App is the official national sex offender search app designed to provide the public with free access to sex offender data nationwide. Funded through a grant from the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking, this app is an additional measure to enhance access to data available on The Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW). This safety resource is designed to help users identify registered sex offenders that reside, work, or attend school within close proximity to their mobile device.
This app offers comprehensive search options for registered sex offenders, which include residential, employment, or school addresses. Users can search nationally by ¼ mile, ½ mile, or 1 mile radius, or by offender name to get the details of registered sex offenders. The initial search is location-based; therefore, the app will use the mobile device's location to conduct the search. However, users can choose to search other locations by tapping the spot on the map, and changes can be made in searching capabilities as improvements become available.
Should the registering jurisdiction of the user’s area not allow for searching by geographic coordinates, the app will use zip code search to locate and match offenders. To view the results of the search based on the zip code query, one can tap the status message at the top of the app. NSOPW is actively working with all jurisdictions to allow searching by geographic coordinates and will adjust the search options as necessary.
When users tap the “More Information” button while viewing the details of a matching record, they will be directed to the registered sex offender’s details on the registering jurisdiction’s public sex offender website. While NSOPW cannot control the information on these websites, it still offers an invaluable service to users of the app seeking information about registered sex offenders.
The primary purpose of the US Department of Justice NSOPW App is to provide the public with an easy-to-use tool to determine whether any registered sex offender resides, works or attends school close to their device's location. By providing access to this information, the Department of Justice hopes to make communities safer. The app is not meant to serve as a substitute for education and prevention information or general inquiries about sex offender registration.
The US Department of Justice NSOPW App can be downloaded for free by any user who wants to view information about registered sex offenders. It is easy to use and provides users with a comprehensive sex offender search experience, in line with the seriousness of the issue. Downloading the app is the first step towards gaining valuable information that can help ensure the safety of oneself or loved ones.
The US Department of Justice NSOPW App is an essential tool for those interested in gaining insights into the world of registered sex offenders in their vicinity. With its comprehensive search capabilities and easy-to-navigate interface, the app provides peace of mind to the user while empowering them with the knowledge to ensure the safety of themselves and their families.
